Materials on the Edge II – The Next Generation of High Temperature Refractory Ceramic Cores for Inve

Application closing date 25 July 2012, employment start date 3 September 2012
Formulation Engineering
University of Birmingham

The 'Materials on the Edge' projects will form part of a high profile Rolls-Royce led programme to develop the next generation of casting ceramics for future Rolls-Royce engine projects. The design requirements of modern turbine components are ever more demanding, new alloys, more complex geometries, thinner walls and tighter dimensional tolerances are all critical in achieving improved engine performance with lower fuel consumption and noise. This EngD will seek to understand ways to improve the formulation of the core materials for improved mechanical stability and therefore dimensional control at higher casting temperatures. The position is available immediately and there is no closing date.
